Restoration of 19th century coat of arms. Mahogany.

Stonegate, York.

This 19th century heraldic carving was badly damaged by a leaking drain  pipe.  Like the Devil’s Head,  the top part was completely  rotten and was only held together by the paint which gave me enough information to work from. I cut away the spongy wood until I had some solid and undamaged material which I could attach the new mahogany to for carving.  It was then repainted, gilded and then had a lead hood put above to protect it.
